Moment of Zen

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.

Incredibly enough, she lifted 14 kilograms worth of weights– almost 31 pounds– to achieve such notoriety. She has been exercising her intimate muscles for fifteen years, and has already made her entrance into the Guinness Book of Records as the possessor of the world’s strongest vagina. “After I had a child, my intimate muscles got unbelievably weak. Fact or Fiction

If you pluck your hair, more grows back.

FICTION

On an episode of Sex and the City, or “The Show That was Great Before the Second Sequel,” Samantha is upset over a grey hair. She goes to pluck it but decides against it. As she tells our heroine Carrie Bradshaw, “If you pluck it, ten more will come to its funeral.”– is Samantha’s anxiety based in truth?

No, no, and more no, according to experts. When your shaved hair grows back, it is initially short and stubbly. The longer hair is, the softer it becomes. So while it may seem like the gods are punishing you for taking a razor to unwanted hair – it’s really just the biology of your body

Fact or Fiction

You will ruin your eyes reading in dim light.

FICTION!!!!

But reading in dim light can certainly strain your eyes – it’s just that those itchy, burning tired eyes will restore themselves. No permanent damage is possible.

When you walk into a room where light is low, your eye adjusts in several ways. When you read, your eye must be able to focus an image of the words onto your retina. To do this, the iris, as well as the muscles that control the shape of your lens, must contract to keep the focused image on the retina.

If you read in low light, your visual muscles get mixed signals: Relax to collect the most light, but at the same time, contract to maintain the focused image. When that object is poorly lit, focusing becomes even more difficult because the contrast between the words and the page isn’t as great, which decreases the eye’s ability to distinguish visual detail. That ability is called visual acuity. Your eyes have to work harder to separate the words from the page, which strains your eye muscles.

When your eyes are working this hard for a long period of time, they become tired, much as any muscle would. The strain may result in a number of physical effects including sore or itching eyeballs, headaches, back and neck aches and blurred vision. Because you often don’t blink enough when focusing on a single object, you may also experience uncomfortable dryness in your eyes. None of these symptoms damage your eyes, and they eventually go away. If the symptoms don’t go away once you stop straining your eyes, however, then see an eye doctor. You may have an underlying eye problem like nearsightedness; the fact that the symptoms of eye strain overlap with those of nearsightedness is likely a reason why some continue to argue that reading in dim light causes permanent damage.

For now, it seems, the eyesight of children who read by flashlight is safe. Still, it’s certainly easier on your eyes to read in good light that falls directly on the page without causing a glare. You can also avoid eye strain when you’re reading by blinking frequently and taking a moment to focus on something out the window or across the room every 15 to 30 minutes.

Fact or Fiction

The actor who portrayed the “Marlboro Man” in TV and print ads for cigarettes died of lung cancer.

FACT

The tobacco industry was one of the first to advertise on television.  Phillip Morris’ campaign for their Marlboro brand of cigarettes – depicting a rugged cowboy known as the “Marlboro Man” – was one of the most successful and long running.  Conceived in 1954, the campaign ran until cigarette advertising was banned from TV in January 1971 – and continued in print for many more years.  During that time, several different men portrayed the Marlboro Man, two of whom died of lung cancer.   David McLean, who appeared in TV and print ads starting in the early ’60s, died in October 1995 at age 73.  Wayne McLaren, who posed for print ads in the ’70s, died in July 1992 at age 51.

Common Sport-Related Injuries and How to Fix ‘Em. Essentially, it’ll be like a first aid/first responder situation wherein you can become your own paramedic-of-sorts. We’ll throw around various situations like:

-Differentiating Heat Exhaustion from Heat Stroke from Heat Cramps (commonly seen in most outdoor sports like running and cycling)

and how to treat them

-The above might be a great segue to addressing dehydration and maintaining water-electrolyte balance–this is if your other guest, Noelle, doesn’t cover this in her running topic

-The importance of stretching and which type comes first- dynamic or static stretching before working out or doing sports

-Treating sprains and strains and the importance of P.R.I.C.E.

-How to treat “Epistaxis” aka “nosebleed”

-What to do during when someone gets struck by lightning (sounds silly but it could actually happen)

-What to do when someone gets a bad allergic reaction and also goes into an “anaphylactic shock.” I.e. bee stings, venomous bug bites

-Putting together a first aid kit/a list of emergency hotlines

-Signing up for a CPR/AED class

Bizarre World Sex Records

World’s Most Prolific Mother (69 babies)

Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782), was a peasant from Shuya, Russia. Though not noteworthy himself, his first wife, Valentina Vassilyeva, set the record for most children birthed by a single woman. She gave birth to total of 69 children; however, few other details are known of her life, such as her date of birth or death. She gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets and 4 sets of quadruplets between 1725 and 1765, in a total of 27 births. 67 of the 69 children born survived infancy. The modern world record for giving birth is held by Leontina Albina from San Antonio, Chile. Now in her mid-sixties, she claims to be the mother of 64 children. Of these, 55 are documented. The mother with the greatest number of kids that are not tiwns is Livia Ionce. This Romanian woman, 44, gave birth to her 18th child in Canada in 2008.

Fact or Fiction

A hairy swimmer will be slower in the water than a clean shaven swimmer.

FACT

It’s an idea as slick as sea creatures: Could hair slow a swimmer’s pace? A 1988 study supported the athletic benefits of being hairless. For swimmers, removing body hair decreases drag while moving through the water.

This means swimmers who get friendly with a razor before each race go farther and faster with each stroke..

Fact or Fiction

A farmer beheaded a chicken in hopes of dinner, but the chicken survived 18 more months without a head. A farmer thought he was just putting dinner on the table when he picked up an axe and beheaded one of his chickens. Turned out he had a legend on his hands after the now headless rooster bobbed and weaved back to the henhouse and lived for 18 more months — without a head.

FACT

Lloyd Olsen of Fruita, Colo., did indeed own the world’s only surviving headless chicken, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. He wielded the infamous axe in September 1945, unaware that he and his rooster would go down in history. The animal, now dubbed Mike and celebrated with a festival, Web sites and various magazine articles, apparently survived because the blade missed his jugular vein and a clot prevented him from bleeding to death. The axe blow landed high enough that most of the chicken’s brain stem and one ear remained intact. Olsen kept the animal fed and watered by inserting an eyedropper directly into his gullet. Eighteen months after the chicken lost his head he choked to death in a motel room. Residents of Fruita remember Mike as “a big fat chicken who didn’t know he didn’t have a head.”

Fact or Fiction

Elephants are afraid of mice.

FICTION

There is no evidence that elephants are afraid of mice, according to animal behavior experts. In fact, elephants do not appear to be very fearful, especially in the wild, where they share habitats with fierce predators such as lions and tigers. Most elephants in captivity coexist peacefully with rodents, which nest in the abundance of hay and straw and feast on the pachyderm’s leftovers. Elephants can behave unpredictably in captivity, however, and are very protective of their young.
