The 2010 Miss Universe Body Paint Controversy

So there’s this big hoopla about the Miss Universe 2010 Pageant reportedly going too far because of some naked, nude, body paint pictures of their contestants…

I of course, in the name of journalism, heard about these naked Miss Universe Pageant 2010 Body Paint pictures and had to investigate for myself…

Upon my research, as you’ll see with the very “controversial” Miss Universe pics below…. I have come to the conclusion that:

The people complaining about these Miss Universe Body Paint pictures are probably Old Hags who have never gotten laid in their lives. They have no loves and would probably think that kissing is only appropriate when you’ve been dating for 37 years.

The pictures look fine! I thought there was really some sort of crazy stuff that triggered this “Miss Universe Body Paint Controversy.” But no…. just old hags.

Lark-Marie Anton, vice president of marketing and public relations for the organization, responded to the charges of inappropriateness saying:

“The contestants who compete at Miss Universe are diverse, as they represent more than 82 countries around the globe. Many of their cultures embrace nudity… We feel the images captured are fashionable and cutting edge!”

The 2010 Miss Universe pageant airs on August 23. Do you think these pictures cross the line?

Reports say Hilary Duff married a hockey player named Mike Comrie…. so Hilary Duff is now Hilary Comrie?

Until I see some Hilary Duff wedding pictures, I’m saying it’s all a big Hilary Duff hoax!

I mean she hasn’t even reached puberty yet…..

I swear last I checked, Hilary Duff was just 16….

Valedictorian Speaks Out Against Schooling – Our Education System Needs Fixing!

I was completely blown away by this video! This high school valedictorian shares the exact same sentiments I do about education systems that are designed simply to have students compromise their individualities and just blend in. Conforming is the name of our education system!

I was born in El Paso, Texas USA, but spent most of my younger years growing up in the Philippines. It was here that I was subjected to some of the most “creativity-killing” schools that tried their best to make their students just another plain fish in the pond.

The greatest leaders in this world always question the way things are. They don’t just do things because they were told to do it that way. Leaders ask why things are being done a certain way, then they find a way to do it easier, faster and better. Leaders understand the rules, then they break the rules!

I went to three secondary (elementary) schools in the Philippines because I often got kicked out of my schools from either not wanting to memorize 2,000 Chinese vocabulary words (not exaggerating) or because it never really interested me and thus I skipped class way too often. Even when I was in class I would always fall asleep or be told by the teacher that I was not “a good student” (meaning a good follower or good servant) and thus would get in trouble one way or another. The schools I went to here, Saint Jude Catholic School, San Lorenzo Ruiz Academy and Saint Peter Apostolic School and I don’t recommend sending your kids here EVER!

Anyway, back to the video. The valedictorian talks about not being happy or confident with her career path even though she’s the valedictorian. She says that yes, she may have gotten the best grades, but that only means that she was the best at doing what she was told. She says that while she was busy taking notes in class, others were doodling their hours away and these doodlers will probably one day be great artists. While our valedictorian was out doing homework, others were keeping busy with their hobbies and favorite activities and these people may too become great at these extracurricular engagements. So now, even though she was a valedictorian, she feels lost.

I know how most old school thinkers believe that a piece of paper may be the “safest” way to have a normal salary in this world. But if you haven’t realized, there is an army of high school and college drop outs who knew what they wanted and went for it! (i.e. Bill Gates) No amount of education will compare to a strong drive and persistence to succeed. It’s the risk takers that become the millionaires, leaders and change-makers of tomorrow.

Anyway, I wouldn’t dare condemn my worst enemy to a fate of being normal. My biggest fear in my life is that I’ll one day look back and realize that I had a mediocre life.

DON’T BLEND IN – STAND OUT!

DON’T CONFORM – BE YOURSELF!

Most of all,

NEVER LIVE YOUR LIFE ACCORDING TO HOW OTHERS THINK YOU SHOULD!

Inception Ending is a Work of Art

WARNING WARNING!!!! SPOILERS ALERT

In the Sistine Chapel, there’s an image painted by Michelangelo of god who’s about to give the gift of life to man. In this epic work of art, the most breathtaking part of it all is that there are a few inches of separation between the hand of god and that of man / Adam. That little space of eternity between their fingers touching makes the entire painting the work of art that it is because of how much emotion is packed into that little bit of ambiguity.

That’s sort of how I felt with the ending of the new box office hit, Inception.

The Inception ending is really ambiguous and many movie goers were complaining about director Christopher Nolan (of the Dark Knight) saying that he didn’t know how to end his own movie.

On the contrary, I believe he knew exactly what he was doing.

In the movie Inception, we’re lost with the ending and have no clue whether or not Leonardo DiCaprio’s character indeed made it out of the dream world and whether or not he is back in the real world. There’s a second or so that separates the truth to this story.

On the other hand, it’s that split second that really defines life as it is. I mean, aren’t we walking around everyday not really really knowing what’s going to happen next. Aren’t we all just a bit lost in our dreams as well? Perhaps I can even go as far to say that the people who do blend their dreams with the real world are the ones who get to really synergize both world and end up creating a reality that reaches their dreams?

Ok, that might have been too confusing.

In short… I liked the Inception ending.

An open letter to “Mr/Ms. I-don’t-have-a-Facebook-account” person

It’s come to this. The world as we know it is now but a tiny piece of the bigger picture. This new reality I speak of is the place most of us refer to as the “Facebook” universe.

See, to most of the world, you don’t really exist unless you have a Facebook account. I realized this recently as I, in a very horrifying event, met someone without a Facebook profile. It was such a frightening experience that really came out of nowhere! One second I’m talking to this cute girl, next thing you know, she drops a bomb on me!

“I don’t have a Facebook account,” she casually squealed as if flying-vampire-zombie-pigs were no more than a common household pet.

Not having a Facebook profile means that you have no pictures I can rummage through. It means you don’t have a status to update me with your everyday mundane events. It means that you don’t have a wall I can write on every time I want to bother you with my important Farmville needs. Most of all, it means that I can’t add you as one of my “friends.”

This, of course, is a big problem. How are we supposed to officially fortify our friendship into the pages of history without that little button you click to properly “accept” and acknowledge our friendship? It’s absolutely capricious to assume that we are indeed friends, or even mere acquaintances, without as much as a “poke” or a photo tag of some useless item you’re selling every other week.

Let’s face it; you don’t exist if you’re not on Facebook!

There’s no way to prove that you actually went skydiving if I don’t see any pictures. You don’t really have a boyfriend / girlfriend unless you change your relationship status and make it “Facebook official.” I’ll also have no clue when your birthday is or if you were ever really born unless Facebook tells me that indeed, today is your birthday and I need to pay $1.00 to get you some silly little “gift” to post on your wall.

How do you even expect us to stay in touch? MySpace? You’re so 2000-and-late.

There’s just no way to prove that you’re indeed a real person without you having a Facebook account.

So I’m sorry to say, but I can’t trust anyone who’s not on Facebook! Not having a Facebook account put you on the same lowly level as people who still use their Hotmail email addresses. For heaven’s sake, have some dignity!

So “Miss I-don’t-have-a-Facebook-account” person, do us all a big favor and at least try live in the same century as us.

Facebook is here and it’s here to stay. You’re either part of the hundreds of millions who are on it or you’ll be left out as one of the few slow adapters. Haven’t we learned from Darwin that you need to adapt to survive?

It’s like the saying: “If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, did it really fall?” Well, if a person doesn’t have a Facebook account, are they really a real person?

And that was the Gospel according to the Book of Face.

Ready, set, travel: Cebu Pacific’s backpacker adventure contest

With just P12,000, a backpack and a chunk of resourcefulness, just how far can a traveler go in the Philippines? To answer the question, Cebu Pacific (CEB), the country’s largest airline, will pit local travel experts against each other in a five-day, four-city journey across the Philippines. Dubbed the Cebu Pacific Backpacker Challenge, the competition also aims to show that a fun exploration of the beautiful Philippine islands can be done without going over one’s allotted budget.

The contest will test the participants’ sense of adventure as they visit various pre-selected locales—Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Iloilo. Their journey will begin and end in Manila for the awarding of the winning team.

There will be five teams of two travel experts each. They will form Team Sanuk, Team ROX, Team Columbia, Team High Sierra and Team Eagle Creek, named after participating Primer Group brands synonymous with fun, adventure and travel. These travel experts will go from place to place enjoying as many activities and having as many experiences as their budgets will allow. They can savor local cuisine, visit tourist attractions, try local sports and enjoy whatever else the locale offers.

Each team’s budget also covers accommodation, transportation and meal expenses, which means that making such arrangements with family or friends in the chosen areas is not allowed.

To document their experiences during the trip, the contestants will also use Canon DSLR and Powershot and Ixus cameras with which they will shoot video diaries. They will also be required to report their actual expenses.

At the end of the challenge, the team with the most activities while spending the least will be declared winner. As their prize, each member of the winning team will receive two round-trip CEB tickets to Kota Kinabalu (exclusive of Philippine Travel Tax), and 3N/4D hotel accommodations and transfers in Kota Kinabalu courtesy of the Sabah Tourism Board.

OK OK OK, sooooooo, apparently I won an iPhone at an event today!!! But…. I left the event early… to go to another event…. so I pretty much forfeited the iPhone…. NOOOOOO!!!!!!!

I just came back from crying in the shower and though it may take some time to fully recover from this (if that’s even possible), I’m going to try and sum up all my composure to tell you this story.

First of all I want to thank the cool people at Globe, especially my buddy and fellow video blogger: Coy of ThisisCoy.net for always inviting myself and Hannah (FlairCandy.com) to the cool events from Globe.

Tonights Globe event was indeed cool as always. They were launching their “Globe Flagship Store” which supposedly aims to provide top notch customer service and allow for hands on interaction with the phones, gadgets and gizmos that they have at the Globe stores.

This big event was held at the Ayala Museum to show off their Globe Flagship Store at Greenbelt 4.

What I thought was really cool about it was how they had legendary street guide Carlos Celdran there to walk us to the actual Globe store. For those of you who don’t know Carlos Celdran, he’s a guy who revolutionized the way we do walking tours and the way we look at the Philippines, one step at a time. He leads walking tours all around the metro called “Walk This Way” where he takes groups of tourists and locals around Metro Manila while humorously and articulately conveying the cool facts, history and info about certain places you pass by. Anyway, back to my story…

As I was saying, Carlos Celdran was there to walk us from the Ayala Museum, up the escalator to the new Globe Flagship Store. It was literally like 2 minutes away, but was still fun to finally meet Carlos and to have him say “Walk This Way” as he led us to the store.

So after doing that, I immediately left the Globe event even though they said they were giving away some phones at the end. See the reason I left was coz my other good friends Azrael, of Azraelsmerryland.blogspot.com and Jonel of LetsGoSago.net, reminded me of another event at one of the best steak places in Manila. My tummy was grumbling so I decided that it would be a good idea to leave.

I told Hannah that I was leaving, but she decided to stay as her “ESP” was kicking in, telling her she was going to win something. (ESP… yeah right!)

According to Hannah, her “ESP” actually told her that I was going to win something, but she didn’t think much of it and let me go my merry way.

Now comes the part where my life turns into SUCK!

I get caught in some CRAZY traffic along Makati Ave. I literally have to go like two blocks away but instead, this takes me like 45 minutes to do so. While I’m hungry, tired, in a rush and late for my next event (I HATE being late), I get this text message….

Followed by this one….

Then this one…

That’s about the time I freak out in the car…

I screamed, non-stop, for the next 26 minutes and 37 seconds that I had to drive in that god-forsaken hell hole of a traffic jam that’s called Makati Avenue to get two blocks down!

Finally I get there to my next event. I see the two other guys who won prizes but left early sitting at the end of the table, I gladly join them to share my new found grief with them, besides, misery loves company. I sit next to Azrael and Jonel and show them the text I received…

We then do nothing for the rest of the night other than remind each other about the stupidity that had taken place.

Jonel: “So… it’s ok, I’m sure this steak is going to be worth it…”

Azrael: “Yeah… we’ll call yours the Samsung Galaxy Steak! It probably tastes better than Vince’s iSteak!”

Vince: “Well, look on the bright side… at least my old phone is about to break down and I really need a new phone…. waaaaittt…. DAMNIT!”

Jonel: “Azrael, does your Android Steak have Google?”

Vince: “It’s all good guys, see if I was dying in the dessert, I couldn’t eat that iPhone to save my life! But this steak would nourish me!”

Azrael: “Yeah, but your iPhone would have GPS…”

Jonel: “And you could call for help…”

Vince: “I hate you all….”

We then take our own moments of silence and cry for a bit. We then named our little club as the “No Phones Club” which is, today, an exclusive club only for idiots that leave events before the raffles at the end.

So at the end of the night, I swing back by Greenbelt 4 to pick up Hannah. She gets in the car and starts talking about how her “ESP” told her I was going to win but she didn’t listen to it and blah blah blah about this ESP crap.

Vince: “That ESPN stuff doesn’t work!”

Hannah: “It’s ESP… and yes it does. It’s just like intuition or your sixth sense”

Vince: “More like sixth bullshit!”

Hannah: “Really, it does work.”

Vince: “Well ask your ESPN what number between 1 – 15 I’m thinking of right now!”

Hannah: “13″

Vince: ” … “

Hannah: “Did I get it right?”

Vince: “…. Lucky guess!”

After that I decided to just shut up and drive.

So what important lesson did we learn from all this? Well I’ll tell you later… I have this other event I need to go to now….

*Anyway I’ll tell you more about the really good, like phone worth good, steak place we went to on WhenInManila.com soon. —- *** UPDATED!!! Just posted the steak that’s better than an iPhone…. My iSteak here.
