Tips for Accomplishing your Goals in the New Year

Every Sunday morning, on my radio program at Mellow 94.7, I invite guests to share their knowledge with me and my listeners. I invite them over to “edumacate” us in their fields of expertise.

Today, I was fortunate to have a very driven and young achiever who came to share his advice on accomplishing your goals for the new year.

My guest was Ryan Songalia, the youngest writer ever inducted into the Boxing Writers Association of America, the organization which selected Manny Pacquiao as the Fighter of the Decade last year. Ryan’s stories have also been published in the top publications in New Jersey such as the Jersey Journal and the Star Ledger. His work has been quoted in FoxSports Yahoo Sports as well as Philippine publications like the Manila Bulletin, the Philippine Star and ABS-CBN. He has also been interviewed as a boxing expert resource person by TV networks, radio shows and publications in the United States and the Philippines.

Here’s Ryan Songalia’s tips for accomplishing your goals in the new year.

1. Show your initiative – Its easy to make excuses and harder to make strides towards your goals. The worst excuse I hear from people is that they cannot achieve their dreams because they come from urban areas or didn’t go to the best schools. I always jest, “Hey, I went to the same schools as you did.”

-Nobody will care about your dreams the way that you do, so take life by the reins and don’t wait for someone else to make your life’s decisions for you.

-It’s easy to dream and never take it further. Come up with a plan of action and carry it out. I sometimes mentor children and teens in New Jersey and I always ask them what they want to do with their lives. If they say they want to be a pro basketball player, I ask them how they are striving to reach that goal right now. It’s never too early to plan for the future.

I never let the fact that I haven’t finished college yet hold me back. I finished my first year of college back in 2006 and couldn’t wait to get started as a writer. I was like a powder keg searching desperately for a match. I wasn’t going to let any deficiency in credits hold me back. Just as a boxer must box to stay sharp, a singer must sing and a guitar player must play, so too must a writer write to stay sharp.

And its not as if I was sitting in a well-equipped office with high-speed wireless internet submitting stories to different publications. I was 19 living on my own in New Jersey and my parents had moved away and I had lost my job in a supermarket so I had no money to pay for internet. What I would do was go up on my rooftop and steal wi-fi from surrounding buildings and email my stories whenever the connection was strong enough. In a sad twist, my house was burglarized and my laptop was stolen but I didn’t let that deter me. Whatever money I had, went to internet cafes so I could write my stories. I lost my cable too so I spent my time reading books on the subject of boxing to familiarize myself better with the history of chronicling boxing.

2. Fake it til you make it – This was a term that a boxer once told me while he was rising through the rankings. He wasn’t a champion yet but that didn’t stop him from looking the part. This is an adaptation of the line, “Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have.” Confidence and the self-belief that says, “I’m a success because I desire it to be” is what separates the dreamers from the accomplished.

-Make everything about you shout confidence, from the way you dress to the way you stand and speak. Never second guess yourself, and stick by your guns. As a writer, I sometimes say things that are quite unpopular, but if I say them, I must stick by them because there was something there that made me say those things.

3. Know your strengths – Very important factor because this goes along with striving for attainable goals.

– I have a joke that I tell about my decision to follow my chosen profession. I say, from the moment I walked into the boxing gym, my trainer knew I was going to be a great writer. I knew fairly quickly that I wasn’t cut out for the life of a boxer but this was something I had a passion for. Through constant trial and error, I was able to parlay this passion into a life as a journalist, focusing mainly on boxing. And now I have other endeavors, including this month’s Rogue Magazine on shelves now. Two of my mini-pieces on American based editors are included.

-If you’re a people person, engage people on a personal basis and let this shine through. If you’re into computers, be on the front edge of technological advances in your industry. Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets are reshaping our means of communication but the next outlet is just around the corner.

4. “If you believe then you can achieve” – This was a lyric from a 2Pac song, but it applies to reality. I was 19 years old, just made the unpopular choice to take a break from school and here I was trying to make it as a writer. So few people believed in me early on, save for those who saw me climbing onto my rooftop with my laptop under my arm every morning and climbing down at night.

– I feel a lot of people judge you based on what they can do, not knowing what you are made of inside. You know yourself better than anyone else so let yourself be the ultimate authority in what you want to do.

– As children we are told to respect our elders, I feel this is of supreme significance because our elders who have come before us are fountains of experience that we should not forsake. Along the way, working alongside the much more experienced newspaper writers helped me by giving me a mold by which to grow from, then eventually become my own entity. I try to absorb as much from my elders as possible.

5. Empower yourself – Mentally, physically and spiritually, if you build yourself into a fort, you can not be defeated. The uninformed are the ones victimized by society so continuously work towards improving your acuity. I like to read constantly, and I find it keeps my sense intune and mind sharp. I like to diversify my subjects also so as not to be caught off guard in spontaneous conversation.

And those are your top tips for accomplishing your goals this new year.

Hallowe’en or All Hallow’s Eve

Oct 31. An ancient celebration combining Druid autumn festival and Christian customs. Hallowe’en (All Hallow’s Eve) is the beginning of Hallowtide, a season that embraces the Feast of All Saints (Nov 1) and the Feast of All Souls (Nov 2). The observance, dating from the sixth or seventh century, has long been associated with thoughts of the dead, spirits, witches, ghosts and devils. In fact, the ancient Celtic Feast of Samhain, the festival that marked the beginning of winter and of the New Year, was observed Nov 1.

Trick or Treat or Beggar’s Night

Oct 31. A popular custom on Hallowe’en, in which children wearing costumes visit neighbors’ homes, calling out “Trick or treat” and “begging” for candies or gifts to place in their beggars’ bags. In recent years there has been increased participation by adults, often parading in elaborate or outrageous costumes and also requesting candy.

Facts about ghosts:

What Is A Ghost?

Ghosts are defined as the disembodied spirits of once living breathing human beings. It is said that ghosts haunt certain places particularly where there may have been great tragedy or a person’s life has been cut short. Though there have been reports of ghost cars, trains and ships.

And there appears to be two distinct types of ghosts. Residual ghosts simply replay events from the past over and over. Usually in a residual haunting the ghost or spirit is not able to react to a live human or talk to them. Residual hauntings appear to simply be events from the past playing over and over in the same place and usually at the same time or under the same conditions.

And then there is the type of ghost or spirit that can interact and communicate with the people around it. This is usually the most frighting type of ghost.

She has been exercising her intimate muscles for fifteen years, and has already made her entrance into the Guinness Book of Records as the possessor of the world’s strongest vagina. “After I had a child, my intimate muscles got unbelievably weak. Fact or Fiction

If you pluck your hair, more grows back.

FICTION

On an episode of Sex and the City, or “The Show That was Great Before the Second Sequel,” Samantha is upset over a grey hair. She goes to pluck it but decides against it. As she tells our heroine Carrie Bradshaw, “If you pluck it, ten more will come to its funeral.”– is Samantha’s anxiety based in truth?

No, no, and more no, according to experts. When your shaved hair grows back, it is initially short and stubbly. The longer hair is, the softer it becomes. So while it may seem like the gods are punishing you for taking a razor to unwanted hair – it’s really just the biology of your body

World’s Most Prolific Mother (69 babies)

Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782), was a peasant from Shuya, Russia. Though not noteworthy himself, his first wife, Valentina Vassilyeva, set the record for most children birthed by a single woman. She gave birth to total of 69 children; however, few other details are known of her life, such as her date of birth or death. She gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets and 4 sets of quadruplets between 1725 and 1765, in a total of 27 births. 67 of the 69 children born survived infancy. The modern world record for giving birth is held by Leontina Albina from San Antonio, Chile. Now in her mid-sixties, she claims to be the mother of 64 children. Of these, 55 are documented. The mother with the greatest number of kids that are not tiwns is Livia Ionce. This Romanian woman, 44, gave birth to her 18th child in Canada in 2008.

Fact or Fiction

A hairy swimmer will be slower in the water than a clean shaven swimmer.

FACT

It’s an idea as slick as sea creatures: Could hair slow a swimmer’s pace? A 1988 study supported the athletic benefits of being hairless. For swimmers, removing body hair decreases drag while moving through the water.

This means swimmers who get friendly with a razor before each race go farther and faster with each stroke..

World’s Largest Penis – 13.5 in

The official rank of the largest penis belongs to a man measured and documented by Dr. Robert Dickinson in the earlier part of the twentieth century. This record-holding penis was 13.5 inches (34 cm) in length and 6.25 inches (16 cm) in circumference.

And  the living owner of the world’s biggest human penis is Jonah Falcon. Falcon’s 13-5 inch member has been measured for a TV special, making him one of the few guys who can back up his bodily boasts.

Fact or Fiction

A man died after playing video games for more than 24 hours non-stop

FACT

in fact, several men have died after marathon video-game sessions, particularly in 24-hour cybercafes that are popular gaming venues in Asian countries. In South Korea, a 24-year-old man died of exhaustion after playing for 86 straight hours in 2002; and a 28-year-old man who had recently lost his job because he spent too much time playing Starcraft died of heart failure in 2005 after a 50-hour session. A 27-year-old Taiwanese man reportedly passed away in 2002 after playing video games for 32 hours, and in 2007, a man fainted in a Chinese cybercafes after three straight days of gaming. Perhaps these cybercafes should impose time limits.

Reason to party today – coz it’s happy hour somewhere in the world.

Grandparents Day – September, first Sunday after Labor Day

Grandparents’ Day is a far more recent invention than Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. It was fostered by Marion McQuade, and a presidential proclamation on September 6, 1979, made it official. It is observed throughout the United States on the first Sunday after Labor Day, except in Massachusetts, where it is observed on the first Sunday in October.

There are a number of ways in which grandparents can be honored and their day celebrated. One is to invite real or “adopted” grandparents to school for the day, where they participate in their grandchildren’s classes or special assembly programs. Gift giving is not as widespread on this day as it is on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

Video Games Day

Sept 12. A day for kids who love video games to celebrate the fun they have playing them and to thank their parents for all the cartridges and quarters they have provided to indulge this enthusiasm.

Moment of Zen

At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not winning one more verdict, or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent.

Hooters Are Getting Huger

A few years ago some UK researchers turned to the world and said “We have good news and we have better news”. The good news was that someone actually gave them money to study boob sizes around the world. The better news was that their findings showed that, worldwide, breasts are getting bigger and bigger.

Just in the UK alone, the average bra size had gone up from 34B to a way juicier 36C. As for the rest of the world, breast sizes had been continuously going up for the last 10-15 years, averaging now almost an entire cup bigger than just a decade ago. If this trend continues, someday we might actually need an M-cup bra size.

Plastic surgeries must have some part in this, but diet and lifestyles cannot be ignored. We definitely eat more and exercise less now, and all that fat has to go somewhere – the fact that it seems to be going mainly to breasts is the best evidence that God exists and that he loves us.

Fact or Fiction

Adding baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to Mountain Dew will cause it to glow in the dark.

FICTION

Despite what you may have seen on YouTube, adding baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to a bottle of Mountain Dew will not make it glow in the dark. These videos are a hoax — something else is either added to the bottle off-camera (such as the contents of a glow stick), or careful editing allows the bottle to be substituted for another with glowing contents. In any case, if you try this at home, you’ll be sorely disappointed with the results.

Reason to party today – coz it’s happy hour somewhere in the world.

Breasts implants are the number one cosmetic surgery in the US

Fact or Fiction

The worm in a bottle of Mexican tequila is an aphrodisiac or hallucinogen.

FICTION

First of all, there are no worms in tequila bottles from Mexico. It is a similar spirit, mescal, that contains the legendary worm. Mescal is distilled from the fermented sap of the agave plant, which also happens to host the gusan rojo worm, which is actually a butterfly larva.

When entrepreneur Jacobo Lozano Páez started bottling mescal in the 1950s, he noticed that these worms inevitably ended up in the mix, and gave the liquor a distinctive flavor. Rather than attempt to filter them out, Páez embraced the worm as an ingredient and came up with the marketing gimmick of including a whole worm in each bottle.

The worms are now raised on farms solely for this purpose, but they are just worms. While they are perfectly harmless to eat — if one is so inclined — they do not have any hallucinogenic or aphrodisiac properties.

Happiness

Moment of Zen

“When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”  – Paulo Coelho quote

How to Make Your Social Network WORK for You

WOW! My guest for my segment “Edumacate Me!” really prepared a lot of stuff for us!

“Edumacate Me!” is a segment that’s part of the radio show called “The G-Spot” w/ DJ Vince G where we try to learn something new every Sunday from the guests that come on air with us at Mellow 94.7

My guest this week is Ms. Carissa Villacorta, the author of the book called “Surreality” and one of the Top 100 Most Influential Filipinas in the US.

Carissa Villacorta talking points for Mellow 94.7 guesting with DJ Vince G

TALK TOPIC:

How To Make Your Social Network Work For You (and everyone else)

We always hear about

Intellectual Quotient

Emotional Quotient from a popular book

How about Social Quotient

How to grow in social intelligence

I feel that endorsements and interviews are the two top ways to get a job. So in a way, they’re results of people liking you enough to recommend you or hire you.

How to make the change from being socially inept to becoming socially adept

I am not claiming to be a teacher, as I myself am still a student of life and relationship building

I’ve realized that when I meet new people, I have a tendency to ask not only

How are you?

But also

“How can I help you?”

Though I don’t always say it aloud.

We all appreciate help. Whether in finding jobs, clients, baby sitters, PR opportunities, or making our dreams come true.

Everybody wants to be Cinderella, but they’re not always successful because they want it for themselves. My suggestion is that we all become Fairy Godmothers to each other –We can introduce them to prince charming, make them a dress and take them to the ball. Because only when we are all Fairy Godmothers to each other can we all become Cinderellas too – our dreams come true.

Noone is ever self-made. We are all products of the kindness and generosity of people we’ve met along the way.

And so you can never say thank you enough.

PR for me does not only stand for  public relations, but it means personal relations

You only have one chance to make an encounter count. People may not meet you ever again. Or you may not meet them ever again. So make the 10 minutes they choose to spend with you a positive and pleasant time.

It only takes a moment, to make, or break an impression.

•         A moment is a retail of time.
Make the moment count.

•         It’s not only about the peso counter, but also about the personal encounter
From the onstage impression to the offstage experience

MAKE THAT ENCOUNTER COUNT

Don’t give them a chance to say cute nga pero snob. The best thing people can say about you is “Gwapo na, mabait pa.” Or “Mabait na, guwapo pa.”

What’s the use of knowing a lot of people to look for a job if none of them want to help you? You know those people you don’t ever want to see again? You don’t want to be one of those people right?

George Washington said in his Rules of Civility and Decent Behavior from the 1700s

Everything done in company must be in consideration of everyone who is present

Always be considerate of people who are on the same room, same street, same country – people who are going to be affected, sometimes disturbed by what you do. Ask Is this right, is this decent, is this considerate?

==

HOW TO GROW IN SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE

Don’t drop names of people you don’t really know or don’t know you

It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

It’s not who you know it’s who knows you.

It’s not who knows you, its who likes you.

Don’t overpromise. Don’t talk too much. Just do your best, pray for the rest and let the results do the talking.

Try not to backstab. You don’t want to see bloody backs everywhere right? You don’t want someone to have a bloody back. You don’t want a bloody back. So don’t stab people with sharp words, especially behind their backs.

Strive not to improve others, but to improve yourself in patience, tolerance and understanding.

Words can break relationships. Especially those you hear from other people.

Conversations are two-way dialogues. They’re not monologues. There was a guy I’ve hung out with thrice already  before he found out (from someone else) where I worked and what I do.  Then he seemed surprised. That’s because he never asked me.  He kept on talking about himself for hours on end. And I didn’t want to interrupt his monologue.

Here are the top recent realizations I have while learning about PR or what is commonly known as public relations, but what I call Person Relations

1. Showing up is the greatest compliment. Staying in touch is the second best compliment.

2. The 24-hour cancellation policy should apply not only in restaurant or hotel reservations but also in social commitments. It’s hard to book another guest, as much as it is to book a new appointment in your day.

3 It has always been my job / second nature to invite friends and strangers to events and goings on. But I only invite up to three times. Decline it, and you will not hear from me again. (Ping Pong)

4. Just say yes. I’m a yes girl. Yes to all invites, openings and opportunities. Let the wind take you to doors that open up for you. And some doors are opened up through invites.

5. I’m allergic to flakes. I hope noone lets it happen that they’re described as flakes. They’re people who say they’d come but actually don’t.

Inversely, I like it when people come on time – plus points for early. Reliability is key.

5.  Respect your word. I strive to live by ‘And the word was made flesh.’ They say ‘don’t say it if you don’t mean it.’ I say, don’t say it if you won’t do it. Make it real.

6. The easiest thing to do is to be happy for other people’s success. I don’t know why other people find it hard.

7. People must have a balance of confidence and humility. There are some who are painfully shy, and there are some who are PAINFULLY confident. Both are equally disturbing. Strike a balance and you won’t turn others away.

8. I don’t understand how people can make saying sorry a habit. How about not doing anything that requires an apology? And only say you’ll make it up if you really would.

Confident but not cocky. Cultured but not flashy.

Humility, gratitude, honesty, courtesy and genuine interest in others are still key.

Confident but not self-absorbed.
Well-bred but not flaunting.
Accomplished but not flashy.
Initiates but not flaky.
Humility and genuine interest in others are still key.

Rule of the world is give and take. We should all start in giving.

Start happy.

Live in peace.

Show up. Keep your word. And keep in touch.

I love socially adept people. They just know what to say, when to say it. How do they do it, and when did they learn it? Kudos to their parents!

Fact or Fiction

You get drunk faster in the air than on the ground.

FICTION

According to an old saying, one in the air is like three on the ground. That adage misses the mark though, because your blood alcohol level doesn’t actually change at a higher altitude as some think. With less oxygen reaching the brain because of the high altitude and the pressurized cabin, it might cause you to feel more intoxicated, but that’s about it.

Nevertheless, it probably isn’t a good idea to get hammered on a plane, if only out of courtesy to your neighbors.

It’s my segment every Sunday where my listeners and I try to learn something new from the cool guests that come on my show. I guess you can say we’re trying to get an “edumacation!”

Aileen

This week’s guest is Ms. Aileen Santos talking about:

The Top 5 Hidden Beliefs That Could Be Making YOUR Love Life Miserable

Aileen Santos is a certified Relationship Coach with a Master’s Degree in Counseling, and she helps single men and women overcome the obstacles that are keeping them from living the relationships of their dreams.

She also regularly conducts relationship workshops in their coaching & counseling clinic in Alabang, and is the author of the ebook called “Seduction Secrets That Really Work! (A Novel).”

It’s a story-slash-self-help-book rolled into one, about two shy singles who discover the “last known copy of a top secret book called Seduction Secrets That Really Work” on ebay.ph. Using the book’s techniques they transform themselves into opposite sex magnets, get into all sorts of dating misadventures…

…and discover that finding real love was a LOT more complicated than they thought.

My Websites:

Real briefly, the top 5 hidden beliefs that could be making your love life miserable include (in my own words):

5. Needing someone else to “complete you” –

You should complete yourself and know yourself fully before going into a relationship

4. Thinking that love “naturally happens” –

People tend to forget that there’s a lot of hard work involved. A relationship includes hard work! Don’t forget that.

3. Thinking that men and women are equal in relationships –

Not in this case. Men should be men and women should be women.

2. Believing in “Love at first sight”

It’s more like “lust” at first sight. Love takes time.

1. Looking for a “Soul Mate –

You should instead look for a “Soul Nurturing Mate”

Anyway, the full explanation and write up from the expert herself, Aileen Santos, will be out next week when Aileen updates her sites. Do add her up on Facebook.com/LoveAndLifeSkills

We will post updates of this soon… check her sites for info.

Fact or Fiction

Coca-Cola originally contained cocaine.

FACT

In fact, that’s how it got its name — from a blend of coca leaf and kola nut extracts used in the original 1885 formula.  At the time, cocaine was a common ingredient in medicines, and Coca-Cola was developed as a medicinal elixir.

When cocaine was later discovered to be harmful and addictive, the company phased it out, leaving only trace amounts to justify the name.  By 1929, the beverage was completely cocaine-free.

Jaws Film Release

With its tagline “Don’t go in the water” and its ominous cello music, the Steven Spielberg–directed thriller shocked audiences on this date. Adapted from a Peter Benchley bestseller, Jaws showed a great white shark preying on the beachgoers of a New England town. It won three Oscars—best editing, best sound and best original score (by John Williams)—and was a blockbuster success.

Moment of Zen

A dad is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who
wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence
when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail…

HAPPY FATHERS DAY!!!!

Fact or Fiction

Early humans and dinosaurs lived in the same era.

FICTION

Despite what you may have seen in any number of B movies, dinosaurs and cavemen did not co-exists. Dinosaurs have been extinct for 65 million years whereas our earliest ancestors only date back about 6 million years.

World’s First Roller Coaster

June 13, 1884. The world’s first roller coaster opened on this day in 1884 at Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY. Built and later patented by LaMarcus Thompson, the “Gravity Pleasure Switchback Railway” boasted two parallel 600-foot tracks that descended from 50 feet. The cars traveled at six miles per hour. Riders paid five cents each for their rides. The roller coaster was a sensation, and soon amusement parks all over the US and the world featured them.

Moment of Zen

“Life is one big road with lots of signs. So when you riding through the ruts, don’t complicate your mind. Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy. Don’t bury your thoughts, put your vision to reality. Wake Up and Live!”  ~Bob Marley

ABOUT UFO WORKSHOPS

ufo Workshops started in 2009, the brainchild of writer/director Emman Dela Cruz (Sarong Banggi), who was inspired by the pioneering success of their independent movie company ufo Pictures (Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros, Sarong Banggi, Endo) and the ufo Gallery (the baby of fellow creative Raymond Lee). The project brought together a diverse community of artists, filmmakers, creative Filipinos into the realm of indie filmmaking and art-making, cross-collaborations and cross-training, all towards a multi-disciplinary approach to working together.

Offering various creative disciplines for those who want to master their art or rekindle that creative spark, the Workshops’ longest-running series so far is Bing Lao’s Found Story (now on its third batch and gearing up for a regional tour). Whether its directing, short filmmaking, cinematography, writing, painting, dancing, a masterclass in acting—you ask for it, we’ll find the right mentor for you.

When ufo picks mentors, they’re looking for the kind of people who still foster professional relationships with their students beyond the classroom walls, helping them get a leg up in the industry or getting them to snap out of a creative rut. Open to everyone, and we really mean everyone because Emman has offered senior discounts, student discounts, early bird discounts and even installment plans to deserving workshoppers, the pay-it-forward mentality that rules the ufo Workshops means that we hope that one day you too will help elevate the arts community/film industry, recognizing that our differences can be our strengths, when tapped productively.

True to his personal advocacy for the “Filipino Creativity,” Emman Dela Cruz believes in the power of an alternative mentorship program as a driving force in creating the next generation of open-minded, big-hearted and community-based Filipino Creatives.
