Happy Even After: Free Workshop for Single Moms

Happy Even After: Free Workshop for Single Moms

There are various reasons why one becomes a single parent. The most common reasons being by chance or by deliberate choice in the case of ending a bad relationship.

But there are also other reasons one becomes a solo parent. One may have lost their partner; or are raising nieces and nephews as their own as guardians (a common occurrence here in the Philippines considering our extended families) or those whose partners are OFWs.

As different as their reasons may be, solo parents all have to deal with the daunting and difficult balancing act of being both a father and mother to a child. They all need guidance on how to cope and information on how to best raise their children under such circumstances.

Sex and Sensibilities.com, a website that aims to empower women by arming them with rights-based information will hold a workshop for solo parents on November 14.

Ana Santos, founder and editorial director of Sex and Sensibilities.com and writer Karen Kunawicz, will speak about their individual experiences on single parenting and share their insights.

Knowing that the start of feeling good is looking good, The Body Shop will also give a short demo to teach the participants how to put on make-up in the least amount of time.

This is a FREE workshop and a pilot test for Sex and Sensibilities.com (SAS) who has received many inquiries and requests about holding workshops/dialogues for solo parents. If successful, SAS will roll out a workshop series that will tackle other aspects of solo parenthood: financial management and budgeting, finding the right yaya, legalities, blended families, and dating again.

“Happy Even After” will be on November 14, Sunday at 9am-11am. Venue is the 2F of Starbucks Ortigas Home Depot, J. Vargas Avenue, Ortigas. Slots are limited. Please reserve your FREE slot by messaging 0927.307.9608.

Christmas Shopping with Global Pinoy Bazaar at the Rockwell Tent

Global Pinoy Bazaar 201OVE

The Yabang Pinoy – Filipino Pride movement celebrates its 5th year by celebrating Filipino Love and Pride.

Together with Yabang Pinoy’s community of Filipino entrepreneurs committed to Filipino artistry and craftsmanship, Yabang Pinoy will once again stage the 6th Global Pinoy Bazaar on Nov 6-7, 2010 at Rockwell Tent, Makati City.

Global Pinoy Bazaar 2010 will feature businesses with 100% Filipino Love and Pride, showcasing ladies’, men’s & children’s apparel, accessories, jewelries, bags & shoes, home decor, beachwear, home and wellness products, as well as Pinoy art and design.

“We believe in buying Philippine-made products.  Our products are just as good as the products from other countries. We have a lot of good ideas and our workmanship is also very good.  We like the vision of the Yabang Pinoy movement as the title  “Yabang Pinoy” says it all.  We can never move forward as a people if we do not believe and take pride in what we have and what we can achieve,” shared Tessa Coscolluela of Tiny Wonder.

Ea de los Santos of outdoor apparel brand Agos says: “We (with partner Mica Ferrer) started as Yabang Pinoy volunteers three years ago. Being part of the group inspired us to start our own local brand. Since there are only a few brands promoting the Philippine outdoor lifestyle, we saw the opportunity and decided to give it a try. Now we can prove that there is really a growing market in the outdoor/extreme lifestyle world: one great example is surfing. It was not hard for us to come up with this business because it is also our lifestyle. Now it will be our second year as merchants and we realize that Global Pinoy Bazaar is not just a bazaar. It is a celebration of local brands growing together and of Filipinos who continue to support local products and ideas.”

“Shoppers can expect unique, quality products for the comfort and safety of mommy and baby at reasonable prices. Our products are made to provide unique and helpful solutions for each mother and child,” says Karen Lopez of MomTreneur.

As early as now, mark you calendars for the best Filipino Christmas shopping experience.

THE 2010 CUBAO EXPO 1-DAY HOLIDAY TWIST BAZAAR

October 16, 2010
November 20, 2010
December 4, 2010
————————–
Saturdays, 1pm-12mn

Since 2007, Cubao Expo has become the place where the unexpected pleasant find is the norm. In the 2010 1-DAY HOLIDAY TWIST BAZAAR, we will have 32 different sellers to satisfy your gift-giving needs, as well as a twist that will put Cubao Expo on the event trend-setting map for years to come!

To differentiate us from the flurry of bazaars that dot the metro during the -ber months, we present to you “LATAGAN SA CUBAO X!”, where a space in Cubao Expo (the former Heritage Art & Antique Gallery) has been set aside for sellers of any goods that are vintage, handmade and art-inspired, “mat/floor-selling style”. We are hoping to gather 50 such entrepreneurial souls to offer their goods to a buying public who come to Cubao Expo to find the unusual, the unique, the hard-to-find.

Entrance to the bazaar is free, and there is ample parking space in the paid parking lot to right of Cubao Expo, as well as in front of the Cubao Expo compound.

This is our 4th straight Holiday Bazaar, and we know it’s going to be even more successful this year. We hope to see you all there!

==============================

For those interested in becoming sellers during the bazaar (“tent/booth” or “latagan”-style), kindly check out this post for details:

Airport Chillin at the Sampaguita Lounge before Singapore F1 Races!

I’m at the airport right now waiting for my flight with Singapore Airlines to head over to Singapore!

I’ll be covering the F1 Races for the first time thanks of course to my friends from Globe! This is my first time to see an F1 Race live and I am totally PUMPED about it!

Oh and the airport is a complete stress fest right now, so wanted to say thanks to our friend Bob Reyes of BobReyes.com for hooking up FlairCandy and I with access to the Sampaguita lounge.

It’s actually really affordable considering there’s a snack buffet (mirienda) along with comfortable seats, airport internet wifi and most importantly: LOTS OF SPACE!

So yeah, very happy right now. I just hate myself for leaving my book at home…. but again, the internet access here at the Sampaguita Lounge at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 is flawless.

Ahhhhhh, space! I swear the crowds in the airport make me want to slam my head against the wall sometimes…. =P

Anyway, thanks again to Bob for letting us stay at the Sampaguita Lounge here at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1! Stay tuned for more updates from Singapore F1 Races!

The Ateneo Art Auction 2010

Bidding for Blue Chip Legacy and Dreams

For two years now, the Ateneo Alumni Association (AAA) has been at the forefront of raising funds for various social involvement concerns through the Ateneo Art Auction. The first auction in 2008 featured works from the masters such as Amorsolo, Malang and Anita Magsaysay-Ho to name a few and several from the most sought after contemporary artists like MM Yu and Bembol dela Cruz. The proceeds helped build several houses for the AAA GK Community in Payatas. In 2009, around 40 select pieces from almost 50 established (such as Ang Kiukok, Arturo Luz and Lao Lianben) and emerging artists (such as Ronald Ventura and Lynyrd Paras) were given to the highest bidders during the live auction. This allowed the Association to donate 1.2 million pesos to the Ateneo Scholarship Fund.

This year, we hope to raise more scholarship funds for deserving but financially disadvantaged students of the Ateneo de Manila University Loyola School of Humanities. The Auction will be held on Saturday, 2nd of October 2010 at the Finale Art File located at La Fuerza Compound, 2241 Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City, with a preview starting Thursday 30th of September 2010.

We believe that this is an excellent opportunity to partner with us for a noble cause—to enable academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students to become future leaders in their respective fields.

Let the bidding begin!

To view the complete set of works for auction, visit www.ateneoartauction.com

This event is Co-presented by Bank of Singapore and sponsored by Pioneer Insurance, Young’s Paper Sales, Inc., Chateau 1771, Rene Barbier Wines, Smart Communications, Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation, with media partners ABSCBN, People Asia Magazine, The Philippine Star, Philippine Daily Inquirer, and Manila Bulletin.

We Are One: A Filipino American Movement to Engage President Aquino

On September 25, 2010,  join hundreds (and perhaps thousands) of new generation Filipino-Americans in making a journey to San Jose, CA to demonstrate to the world that we are ONE Filipino, and that collectively, WE do have a VOICE to make a positive difference.

There are a multitude of issues that plague Filipinos both in our ancestral home and abroad-from poverty and corruption in the Philippines, to division, lack of representation, and general apathy or lack of willpower here in the US.

Yet, I truly believe that we Filipino-Americans of the New Generation have the WILL to make true changes occur.  We are instilled with American ideals and well-educated. We can inspire an entire people with our sheer numbers and with the utilization of social media and the internet.  There is data supporting that if all the Fil-Ams in North America were lumped together, our collective Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or economic output, is greater than that of the Philippines.

We have the opportunity to show solidarity with our fellow Filipinos across the Pacific Ocean that we CARE.  It all starts with being ONE Filipino; that no matter where we are born, what citizenship we have, our ancestral roots will always be from one place-the Philippines.   An Opportunity has been presented to assemble, show solidarity, as well as have fun.  Our time is now.  Let us come together as one People.

I know that my participation in this event will make a difference.  YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE TOO.

Let’s start a chain reaction.  Tell a friend.  Join the movement.   Fly.  Drive.  Bus. Walk.  Ride.  To the rally on September 25, 2010, in San Jose, Ca.  Show up, tell others, and let the movement spread like wild fire.  This is YOUR movement.  This is OUR time.

Hundreds will be there at the rally and their voice will matter.  Will you be there with them?

Together, we can show our unity and make a difference.

Photography Exhibit: GandaNg Pinas (Beauty of the Philippines)

GandaNg Pinas (Beauty of the Philippines)

Photography Exhibit

‘Di ba’t sawang sawa ka na sa mga imahe ng mga mahihirap? Who doesn’t know about poverty?

We see it everyday–in the news, as we cross the streets… Yes, we are aware of the socioeconomic status of the Philippines. We know of corruption, of the poor, of the incontrollable growth of Philippine population, of flood and garbage.

We think of all these things when we think “Philippines”. But have all these negative aspects completely overshadowed the beauty of our country that was and still is?

We are Diploma on Professional Photography students of DLS-College of Saint Benilde. And we present to you “Ganda Ng Pinas,” a photography exhibit on the beauty of the Philippines–the side of our country we seldom get to see.

Mind you, we are not the typical group of students: a retired US Navy, two working moms, a model cum photographer–we are pretty much a mix of the young and not-so-young anymore. But all of us share one thing: love for photography and love for our country.

As the new Philippine administration spurs nationalism and Filipino pride, we believe this is the best time to exhibit GandaNg Pinas. Let us work together to rebuild our nation, tayo ang simula ng pagbabago.

SUPAFEST Manila 2010
September 18, 2010 (8:00pm)
Mall of Asia Open Grounds

Rarely do we see four of today’s hottest and biggest-selling artists coming together to perform in one big music festival for the price of one.

The show will feature Flo RidaT-PainSean Kingston and Kelly Rowland back-to-back in an r&b, pop and dance concert festival where fans can enjoy more than three hours of non-stop hits.

Flo Rida hit the ground running with his blockbuster debut, Mail on Sunday. The rapper’s single, Right Round, shattered the all-time one-week digital sales single record. Flo Rida himself set with his debut, Low. Right Round sold over 636,000 downloads on its first week, making it the highest digital single debut ever. His latest single, Club Can’t Handle Me (featuring David Guetta), is the lead single of the Step Up 3D soundtrack album and is currently one of the hottest singles in the Billboard charts.

Sean Kingston‘s song, Beautiful Girls made history as one of the fastest ascents on the charts ever. His other top ten hits include Me Love, Take You There, There’s Nothin and Fire Burning. Kingston has sold more than six million digital sales, more than 4.5 million ringtones, and has toured with Gwen Stefani and Chris Brown. His latest single, Eenie Meenie features his close friend and teen superstar Justin Bieber. They are currently touring together in the US until the first week of September.

Kelly Rowland rose to fame as one of the founding members of the Grammy winning girl group, Destiny’s Child. Together with Beyonce and Michelle, they were behind the #1 hits like Say My Name, Survivor, Independent Woman and Bootylicious. Her total record sales, when combined with the group, have surpassed 60 million. During the hiatus of the group, Rowland collaborated with famous rapper Nelly on the worldwide number-one hit, Dilemma. In 2009, she scored another number-one hit with her collaboration with French DJ David Guetta on When Love Takes Over. With this success, they have again collaborated for Rowland’s latest single, Commander, which is part of Rowland’s upcoming album. On the concert, she will feature her chart-topping hits, including the ones of Destiny’s Child.

T-Pain, one of the best singer-songwriter and record producer of today’s generation, is the voice behind countless hits, including Bartender, I’m Sprung, Church, Can’t Believe It, Freeze and Buy U A Drank. He also produced and recorded songs with Chris Brown for Kiss Kiss, Kanye West for Good Life, Jamie Fox for Blame It, Mariah Carey for Migrate and Baby Bash for Cyclone. Take Your Shirt Off is his latest single, and is also part of Step Up 3D soundtrack album.

Pecha Kucha Night: Manila, Philippines

Pecha Kucha Night Manila Vol 3

Here we go again! It’s Pecha Kucha Night Manila on September 2, Thursday at the Cineplex 4, Shangri-La Plaza Mall. Organized by social design studio Ideals Creatives.

Tickets are now available! For more details, visit http://pechakuchamanila.com/main/?page_id=5
What is Pecha Kucha Night?

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.

But as we all know, give a mike to a designer (especially an architect) and you’ll be trapped for hours. The key to Pecha Kucha Night is its patented system for avoiding this fate. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each – giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a demand that seems to be global – as Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 340 cities across the world. Find a location and join the conversation. Make it MANILA, of course! 😉

A FREE Seminar intended for parents of pre-teens is on!

Kids nowadays are tech savvy. Beginning at the age of 9, their interest will shift from “edu toys” to gadgets or internet related activities. Though this is not necessarily bad, parents should have a hands-on approach to protect their kids online.

Have you asked yourself what kids are doing on the web? As parents, are we aware of the age criteria on social networking sites? Have you thought of the dangers the web will bring even though your kids are in the confines of your home?

Let us learn together how we can guide our kids online on this area.  More info on the flyer above.
