Happy 2011!

Solenn Heusaff is New Coke Zero Ambassador: Wild at Heart, Fit in Body

So excited to share this news bit with everyone. I was able to get a sneak peak of who the new ambassador is for Coke Zero!

It’s extra exciting to find out how very talented  and beautiful their new ambassador is. I mean really, she’s not just another pretty face! She’s also one who has built quite a reputation thanks to her skills and talents.

This stunning and beautiful lady I’m talking about is already and accomplished assistant designer to one of the country’s giant fashion retailers. Moreover, she’s also a professional make-up artist, commercial model and singer. And just when you think you’ve got her all figured out, she surprises you once more with yet another passion – healthy lifestyle with boxing.

Furthermore, she’s clinched a record deal with MCA Universal andhas also signed with Regal Films. So looks like we’ll be seeing a lot from her this coming 2011.

The lady I’m talking about, who’s the new ambassador for Coke Zero, is the beautiful Solenn Heusaff!

Solenn Heusaff is one woman not afraid to pursue her passions and maintain an active and fit lifestyle. Much like Coke Zero does for you!

Anyway, it was extra cool for me as I just recently saw Solenn Heusaff as she was hanging out with top blogger Hannah Villasis of FlairCandy.com.

Netrogena-Girls-Models-Solenn-Heussaf-Hannah-Villasis-FlairCandy 194

Watch out for more of Solenn Heusaff and Coke Zero in Chanell V’s New Year’s Eve Party! I’ll be there to check it out and celebrate the coming of 2011 with them! It’ll be on Dec 31, 2010, 9pm at Eastwood City Libis.

Start the new year with a wild heart and a fit body with Coke Zero!

***Anyway, check out our update from the 2011 New Year Countdown with Solenn Heussaff here –http://vincegolangco.com/events/2011-new-year-countdown-with-solenn-heussaff-arnel-pineda-and-more/

Oh and just some extra trivia… and this is really sexy…. Solenn has a mantra tattooed on her rib written in French. “If I fall, I will rise again.”

Solenn’s star holds every promise of shining even brighter in 2011, and she has expressed her desire to stay wild and fit in the coming year with Coke Zero.  This is her resolution for 2011, and she invites everyone to join her in declaring they will be wild about their passions and stay fit in the coming year.

The great taste and zero sugar of Coke Zero can help you make the best resolution for 2011.  Be the best version of yourself and explore every passion that makes your heart sing with Coke Zero in 2011.  It’s the official drink of Solenn Heusaff and those just as wild about life as she is.

Art and Passion at the Bonifacio Global City (BGC) Passionfest

clip_image001

My favorite city in the Philippines is helping you guys discover how special it really is!

BGC is already one of my favorite places to hang out at. It’s safe, clean, fun and now, filled with awesome artworks and lights to make the holidays more festive.

Come to Bonifacio Global City (BGC) this holiday season for their “Passionfest Holidays” and truly see what this emerging community is all about!

I want to thank the BGC team for showing me around their side of town. You too can experience this free guided tour! It’s the BGC Fun Tour!

clip_image003

clip_image004clip_image005

The BGC Fun Tour lets YOU experience the season through Bonifacio Global City’s art pieces and holiday installations with onboard entertainment by The Spit (Silly People’s Improv Theater) Group.

clip_image006clip_image007

You’ll get some fun on board entertainment while also learning a little bit about Bonifacio Global City and the art around BGC.

clip_image009

SPIT is sort of like that TV show called “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” where you have these impromptu comedians who make skits, songs and jokes on the spot based on their interaction and suggestions of the crows. So anything goes and every performance is definitely one of a kind!

All you have to do is get your FREE tickets from the Bonifacio High Street Concierge or be at Bonifacio High Street 30 minutes before the departure of the bus, at B8, near Coffee Bean on Dec 18-19, every hour from 6pm-9pm.

clip_image010clip_image011

Here’s some of the cool sites I got to see on the BGC Fun Tour:

All the trellises in Bonifacio High Street are adorned with colorful LED lights that flickers to the tune of Christmas carols. Add a sentence here which lets the reader know what you thought of the lights or how it made you feel.

clip_image012

The theme of the Christmas installations around the BGC is “Parol,” which is an ornamental star-like lantern popular in Philippine culture. They were traditionally made out of native materials and used by farmers to light their way as they went to the night masses (simbang gabi) which is another tradition in the Philippines for the Christmas season.

There are many different “Parols” scattered around the city. The installations featured not the usual parols but a more contemporary and artsy rendition.

clip_image013

clip_image014

BGC’s 60-foot Christmas Tree at the corner of 26th St. and 5th Ave. Along with the other artistic renditions of the “Parol.”

clip_image019clip_image020

TRANSFORMATION by LOR CALMA

Along the corner of 32nd Street and 5th Avenue stands a very majestic piece that illuminates the busy street corner. It’s multi colored lighting and cascading water again reminds you that the artistic talents of Filipinos are definitely world class! The three pillars of this piece, said to represent the three major island groups of the Philippines, can really inspire viewers to feel the possibilities that we too can achieve.

clip_image021

Anyway, to find out more about the cool events happening this Holiday Season at BGC, check out this flyer with info on the BGC events.

Christmas Donation Drive: Haven for the Elderly

elderly col ban 8x20

Christmas is the time for giving.

Though many of us often get overwhelmed with happiness from all the gifts we receive, we must remember that giving is what this season should really be for.

Sharing your blessings with those less fortunate could be the best Christmas gift you could give yourself. Goodness has a way of coming back to you ten fold.

This Christmans, WhenInManila.com is helping out ActivAsia Inc., a Media and Channel Activation agency to give some help to those who need it the most. This year, for our annual Christmas Outreach Project: “Masayang Pasko nila Lola’t Lolo”, we have tied up with Haven for the Elderly formerly known as Golden Acres so that gift and cash donations can be solicited on their behalf.

You too can become a big part of this project and make Christmas a truly merry one for all the Lolo’s and the Lola’s who have been abandoned at the Haven for the Elderly.

Donation boxes will be placed in front of major toll plazas, toll booths and in the Skyway Customer service centers along the South Luzon Expressway to collect donations from Skyway motorists such as clothes, medicines, soap, sleeping mats, cleaning materials and other items for the residents of Haven for the Elderly.

A Giant Christmas Tree lighting event along the Sucat Southbound Exhibit Area was held to kick-off the donation drive last November 29. During the turnover of the donations, we will be holding a simple Christmas Get-Together on December 15, 2010 with the residents at the Haven for the Elderly home in Quezon City.

We encourage donations (old clothes, sleeping mats, blankets, soaps, etc.) for “Haven for the Elderly” from readers/followers of WhenInManila.com starting November 29 to December 13, 2010. Donation drop boxes can be found at the following tollbooths, toll plazas and customer service centers:

  • Nichols A and B toll plaza
  • C5 toll plaza and customer service center
  • Bicutan toll plaza
  • Sucat Northbound and Southbound Exits
  • Bicutan Northbound and Southbound Exits

Donations can also be dropped off at ActivAsia’s office located in 291 St. Joseph Street, Oranbo Drive, Pasig city.

About Calvin Klein

The brand is known as much for its pioneering marketing and advertising campaigns as its minimalist fashions: Brooke and her jeans, Kate and her Obsession, Mark and his tightie-whities. The brand relentlessly expanded and established lucrative licensing deals for jeans, underwear, fragrance, home products, and eyewear.

About CK

The younger sibling to the Calvin Klein Collection, CK was conceived by Calvin Klein in the early nineties as a way to reach his younger audience and connect with the success of Calvin Klein Jeans. Currently under the direction of Kevin Carrigan, the hugely successful mass-market line infuses an urban edge into the brand’s minimalist credo.

About CK and Calvin Klein Eyewear

The name Calvin Klein stands for great designs, latest styles and a very high degree of quality. Its sunglass frames and lenses are extremely lightweight, made from extremely high quality materials and are distinctive, thanks to the range of colors and sizes that they are available in. Besides great looks, Calvin Klein sunglasses offer protection to the eyes. Its lenses provide 100% UV protection and help, not only to look great, but also feel great on hot summer and sunny days.

Best Cartoon Pics for Facebook: Carton Characters Invade Profile Pictures Online

Does your friend Dan look a lot like that Road Runner Cartoon? Maybe your aunt Shelby is starting to look a tad bit like Richie Rich? Is your buddy Paul looking like the Smurfs? Are over 50% of your friends starting to look like cartoon characters?

If you’re wondering about the whole “cartoon pictures for facebook profile” thing that’s going on right now, then fear not. You have not teleported into an inter-dimentional portal where cartoon characters rule the world. Instead, the cartoon character pictures are merely a symbol of people’s advocacy against violence towards kids.

The whole cartoon character profile picture thing started when this little note started making its rounds on Facebook:

“Change your facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same. Until monday (Dec.6) there should be no human faces on FB, but an invasion of memories. THIS IS A CAMPAIGN TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDRENing its rounds on Facebook”

Cool as this cause may seem, it was later discovered that there is no official event, organization or committee that is managing this. Instead, reports even say that it may have initially started as a joke or even a dare just to get someone to change their profile picture to that of a cartoon character.

Either way, there isn’t really much harm done, other than a cartoonish looking portrait on your profile.

It was too hard for me to pick just one cartoon, so here’s my top 5 picks for Best Cartoon Pics for Facebook.

*Not on here, but would be if I wasn’t so sleepy at freakin’ 2:06am…. would be the Ghostbusters, He-Man and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

5. Daria – Ultimate 90s Cartoon!

If I had to sum up the 90s into three words… it would be: “Like totally dude.”

On the other hand, if I had to sum up the 90s into one word, it would be “DARIA”

Daria Morgendorffer is a smart & cynical girl who goes through teenage life as an proud outsider in a world of mainly idiotic teens and condescending adults. This MTV series had a great run with many episodes often referencing current events in pop culture.

The people of Lawndale just don’t get Daria Morgendorffer. She’s cool with that. See, Daria was born alienated, and now she’s just trying to make it through high school with as little human contact as possible. Popularity, friends, activities… whatever. Daria lacks enthusiasm, but she makes up for it with sarcasm. Daria is the spin-off of MTV’s most sucessful cartoon, Beavis and Butt-Head.

Like…. totally dude.

4. Spiderman and His Amazing Friends and those other old school Marvel Cartoons

I don’t know about you…. but I first had a geekgasm after discovering Spiderman had amazing friends. Of course, this awesomeness of a show was aptly named: “Spiderman and his Amazing Friends” as creativity was not discovered until the mid 90s.

Other than Spiderman, Iceman and Firestar, there were also the other 60s Marvel cartoons like the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, The Submariner and more! They all showed right after class and I remember rushing home to see them! Ahhhh, the memories… CLANG BAM POW!

0

3. Thunder Cats and their Hoes

Thunder…. Thunder…. THUNDER CATS…. HOOOOOOOO!!!

Let’s face it… this cartoon just had waaay too many adult related imageries that still haunts our minds. From Lion-O’s sword getting a boner every time he sees the other characters in their dominatrix outfits to Cheetara’s very revealing outfit; this was definitely one of my favorites! Oh and my sword got long and hard too whenever I saw Cheetara….

thundercats_lion-o_01

2. G.I. Joe

Knowing is half the battle and watching the G.I. Joes usually took up half the time I was supposed to spend studying. This racist cartoon, where all Asians knew karate and all black dudes rhymed when they spoke, was one amazing misrepresentation of wars and the military. But hella fun to watch! YO JOE!

gijoe_07

The man had his own G.I. Joe character, and the cartoon version's arms had to be toned down from from their original size in order to fit on the TV screen.

He'll fight for freedom wherever there's trouble! G.I

1. ORIGINAL Transformers Cartoon Profile Pic

Let’s face it, those robots that turned into cars were the coolest thins ever! And no, I’m not talking about the GoBots…. I’m talking about the Autobots and Decepticons! Also, though Megan Fox really gave us our money’s worth, nothing beats the original Transformers! ROLL OUT!

Anyway, sorry but let me change my title from: Best Cartoon Pics for Facebook: Carton Characters Invade Profile Pictures Online to just:

BEST CARTOONS EVER!

They played one game where you had to put a little post-it type tag on the furniture in a room they had set up. If you tagged a piece of furniture that was one of the giveaways, then your name was entered into a bowl with all the other names that tagged that furniture with a chance to win it. Some furniture pieces included a fridge, washer and dryer and a flat screen TV, amongst others.

For the anniversary issue, my Home featured six dwellings: one in a boutique townhouse community, a residential option that draws inspiration from the beauty and majesty of song, a family home that combines timeless simplicity with signature elements, a southern sanctuary that started with memorable conversations that resulted in a contemporary masterpiece, a tropical treasure in the heart of the city and a charming whimsical home in the province.

To celebrate a decade of style, myHome magazine held an anniversary party at the top floor of Discovery Suites especially for their readers. Guests, media personalities, and advertisers walked through the pages of the magazine as the top floor of Discovery Suites was designed with home inspirations taken from different issues of the magazine.

Vince Golangco for Project Headshot Clinic by Niccolo Cosme for World Aids Day

It’s a brilliant concept that is quickly taking the Facebook profile pictures by storm!

Billboards can help spread the word and in today’s new digital age, your profile pictures can be seen just as many times as the top billboards out there along EDSA or New York Times Square. So why not use this knowledge and the internet to help put up an online billboard to help.

I want to thank master photographer Niccolo Cosme for spreading awareness through his lens.

Project Headshot Clinic: Saving humanity through profile pictures.

Radio DJ / Blogger – Vince Golangco for Project Headshot Clinic

Project Headshot Clinic – ACT

The Project Headshot Clinic for 3 years has given a different look at to profile pictures online, it became serving as online billboards on online social networking sites and everyone in it, who participated in Project Headshot Clinic became an instant endorser of the product being advertised, or the cause that was being advocated for whatever that is being advertised, commercial or a particular advocacy.

For over the past three years, the Headshot Clinc team has partnered with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in fighting and responding to the challenge of HIV/AIDS.

The first awareness campaign of headshot clinic and UNAIDS in 2008 was called “AWARE”, followed by in 2008, and then “MOVE” in 2009 a follow up of the first one which aimed to move people from awareness to readiness to respond and act on this specific issue. This year’s, “ACT”, a clear call to action, where voluntary HIV screening and counseling was provided on given shooting dates by Take The Test and ASP (AIDS Society Philippines).

All headshots will be released online and should be used as primary profile pic on all the participant’s social network sites on December 1, 2010 which happens to be is the global celebration of WORLD AIDS DAY.

To do my part in helping spread AWARENESS, here’s a little more info about HIV / AIDS.

WHAT DOES “AIDS” MEAN?

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome:

  • Acquired means you can get infected with it;
  • Immune Deficiency means a weakness in the body’s system that fights diseases.
  • Syndrome means a group of health problems that make up a disease.

AIDS is caused by a virus called HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. If you get infected with HIV, your body will try to fight the infection. It will make “antibodies,” special molecules to fight HIV.

A blood test for HIV looks for these antibodies. If you have them in your blood, it means that you have HIV infection. People who have the HIV antibodies are called “HIV-Positive.”

Being HIV-positive, or having HIV disease, is not the same as having AIDS. Many people are HIV-positive but don’t get sick for many years. As HIV disease continues, it slowly wears down the immune system. Viruses, parasites, fungi and bacteria that usually don’t cause any problems can make you very sick if your immune system is damaged. These are called “opportunistic infections.”

HOW DO YOU GET AIDS?

You don’t actually “get” AIDS. You might get infected with HIV, and later you might develop AIDS. You can get infected with HIV from anyone who’s infected, even if they don’t look sick and even if they haven’t tested HIV-positive yet. The blood, vaginal fluid, semen, and breast milk of people infected with HIV has enough of the virus in it to infect other people. Most people get the HIV virus by:

  • having sex with an infected person
  • sharing a needle (shooting drugs) with someone who’s infected
  • being born when their mother is infected, or drinking the breast milk of an infected woman

Getting a transfusion of infected blood used to be a way people got AIDS, but now the blood supply is screened very carefully and the risk is extremely low.

There are no documented cases of HIV being transmitted by tears or saliva, but it is possible to be infected with HIV through oral sex or in rare cases through deep kissing, especially if you have open sores in your mouth or bleeding gums.

What’s really cool about this is that we also found out that the Manila Bulletin is definitely open to learning about the new digital marketplace and they’re trying to integrate themselves with the new times. Even better, is that we all found out that the Manila Bulletin knows how to throw one hell of a bloggers event!

What Manila Bulletin did right, and many other companies have done wrong, is that they created an actual event that was so much fun, it’s actually worth blogging about. Instead of just giving the online publishers a press release that they would copy and paste, Manila Bulletin went the extra mile and gave everyone a fun filled experience!

Manila-Bulletin-3D-Newspaper-Launch-Bloggers-Event-Picasso-WhenInManila (12)

First was the venue. The had their event at a nice and cozy suite at the Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences along Leviste Street in Makati. It was the perfect size for the small, intimate gathering exclusive to bloggers.

Secondly, the night was well organized, there was enough food, drinks and lots of friendly people to talk to.

Third, the music was great! They invited Joshi Haas and Adam Arnold the new band called “The Gentlemen” who played nice acoustic sounds with both original songs and covers of famous other hits. Coincidentally, “The Gentlemen” are also top models which really scored more points with the girls…

They gave away designer eyewear from RayBan, Ralph Lauren, Prada, Burberry, Bvlgari along with top tech gadgets like the TWO iPod Shuffles, TWO iPod Nanos, TWO iPod Touches and an  iPad! Again, note that it was a very small and intimate crowd so lots of chances for everyone to win!

Pilipinas Kay Ganda: Philippines New Brand from the Department of Tourism and DoT Sec. Bertie Lim’s Speech

So there’s a lot of talk about the new branding for the Philippines, as unveiled last night at an event hosted by the Philippines’ Department of Tourism (DoT).

They gave invited guests and members of the media a first look at the new campaign under the new slogan of “Pilipinas Kay Ganda.”

There are mixed opinions about the new direction for our tourism and the branding we hope to package our country as. Unfortunately, most of the comments and opinions I’ve read have been on the negative side.

One of the main comments I’ve been seeing is that our slogan is in the native Filipino language, and thus, may not be as appealing to foreigners. I however am not so sure about that criticism as this may actually peak the curiosity of outsiders as to what the slogan “Kay Ganda” really means.

All I know is that we won’t know for certain whether or not this new idea is good or bad until we look back at this a few years from now. For now, I suggest we hope for the best and support them the best way we can. Hopefully, we can trust these government officials to be doing what they believe is the best thing for the tourism industry.

For more info and for a detailed explanation of the reasoning behind this new Philippines Branding campaign and logo, check out the Philippines Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Bertie Lim’s full speech below:

FULL SPEECH OF PHILIPPINE TOURISM SECRETARY BERTIE LIM
FOR PREVIEW OF BRAND PHILIPPINES

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen… Good evening.

Thank you for joining us tonight as we give you a preview of the new Philippines brand that will be the centerpiece of our tourism promotional programs and advertising campaigns in the years to come.

It is the result of intensive market research and a rigorous branding process done by one of the large agencies in the country.  And I think it is a compelling brand, both in form and substance. But I must quickly add that it is not complete, in the sense that we have yet to develop the campaigns. Nor is it final. We still have to do market testing and FGDs to refine the brand. At best, it is a work in progress.

We believe that a country brand is so important that before we commit ourselves to the production and placement of expensive TV commercials, we would like to share with you, the industry stakeholders, the emerging brand. It is in keeping up with the President’s philosophy of public-private partnership. Your inputs will help in strengthening the brand even more.

In many cases, a rebranding exercise by a nation is met with stiff resistance.  In 2007, when Singapore first toyed with the idea of rebranding, an article in the Singapore Business Times openly criticized the government for even considering it.

The article declared, “The latest effort by the government to craft and communicate an all-encompassing message to the world about what Singapore is all about, what makes it unique and great, etc … is likely to fail.” It went on to argue that Singapore has firmly established itself as the premiere business destination. Why repackage Singapore to mean something else? Why fix it when it ain’t broke?

Similarly, some people are questioning the wisdom of our own rebranding. Why not just build on the brand equity of Wow Philippines? With our limited budget, can we really successfully launch and sustain a new brand? I will address those questions later.

Meanwhile, Singapore launched its new brand early this year. And already, they have achieved their arrival target for the year as early as October. We can only conclude that Singapore has successfully repositioned itself from a business destination to one where you can work and play. Of course, the brand launch was timed with the opening of a theme park and casinos.

There’s an important lesson here.

Simon Anholt, foremost authority on Nation Branding, tells us that positioning a country’s brand is about highlighting the attributes that differentiate it from other nations. But the points of difference must be relevant, distinctive, and believable.

Without a doubt, Singapore’s old brand was relevant to its primary market –the business traveler. It was believable. The business and communications infrastructure were in place. And it was distinctive. Singapore was one of the few, if not the only one, who can claim to be the business hub in the region.

When they expanded their market to include the leisure traveler, they needed to project a new Singapore. The idea of a “work and play” destination was certainly relevant to this new market. The casinos and theme park made it believable. And once again, Singapore can lay claim to that distinctive brand.

Of course, a brand must also have attractive visuals and a catchy slogan. And Singapore’s new brand has that too.

As we reveal our own brand tonight, I am confident that you will find the visuals charming and the slogan catchy. But the more important questions are: Is it relevant? Is it distinctive? And is it believable?

In the last four months, we have received many brand suggestions from well-intentioned people.  Each proponent is passionately convinced that it is the brand that will bring in the tourists in flocks. Using the three brand positioning questions to test the suggested brand will give us an idea of how the brand will fare.

Let me give you just two examples.

One brand suggestion is “Latin Asia”, highlighting our unique Hispanic heritage brought about by over 400 years of Spanish rule. It certainly is distinctive. We are the only one in the region who can claim it, offering a unique experience in our rich culture and character as a people. It conjures images of Spanish architectures combined with song, dance, and romance. It is believable. It reflects both in our looks and in our way of life. But is it relevant? Is it compelling enough to make tourists prefer us over our neighbors as a leisure destination? Maybe. Maybe not.

Another suggestion is to highlight our peace-loving nature as a people, which we really are, deep inside. The idea is to counter the negative image resulting from the August 23 incident. It is definitely relevant, especially since we are addressing a current concern. It is distinctive. I don’t know of any country in the region claiming to be “peaceful” or “peace-loving”.  But is it believable?

I think it will take a lot of effort and money to convince travelers, especially when they frequently see in the news stories of crime and violence. Besides, it can easily be parodied. I can almost imagine the CNN headline the next time a similar incident like August 23 happens: “Philippines: A Place Where You Can Rest in Peace.”

The brand you are about to see is relevant, distinctive and believable. It extols our innermost beauty, and not just of our destinations, but also of our people and everything else that we do. It is something that we can distinctively claim, and every foreigner who has visited our shores will attest to it. It is also relevant and appealing to a market constantly searching for a more beautiful place and experience.

But when we present it to others, we receive mixed reactions, eliciting either excitement or disbelief – not so much with the message, but with the means we chose to convey the message. It is a radical departure from what our neighbors are doing, and to the faint of heart, a bit risky.

Simon Anholt, in his article “From Nation Branding to Competitive Identity” rightfully observed that many tourism campaigns are so similar that it leads to commoditization. When our neighbors are claiming to be amazing, incredible, charming, inspiring, and truly Asia – what can we really say that will make us more than just another Asian destination?

We need to be more daring in expressing our brand, if we are to rise above the clutter.

When presented in the right context, we often end up making our audience full-pledged supporters of the new brand. This was the case when we presented it to some of you. This was even more so when we presented to the President. He even gave his own inputs in terms of colors and other visual elements, which are now part of the brand you will see tonight.

Going back to the questions – “Why not just build on the Wow Philippines brand?” and “Can we afford to launch and sustain a new brand?”

The answer is quite simple. At a time when every nation, big or small, is either creating a new brand or repackaging their current ones, would you rather rehash an 8-year old brand? Besides, a new brand always generates a buzz that translates to more media mileage for the same promotional budget.

Even more importantly, this is a good opportunity for us to express in a fresh manner the hope and optimism that the Aquino administration represents.

Finally, let me just say that a brand, by itself – no matter how solid the concept is, no matter how stunning the visuals are and how compelling the slogan is, no matter how big the budget is – cannot guarantee success.

In 1997, Prime Minister Tony Blair endorsed a new brand for the UK – “Cool Britannia”. The new brand repositioned Britain as a modern, forward-thinking nation and a world leader in creativity and innovation; a sharp contrast to the snooty and anchored-in-past-glory image of the old brand, “Rule Britannia”.

It made sense. It was distinctive and caught the essence of everything young and trendy about modern Britain. From BritArt to BritPop, from fashion to business, it sought to encapsulate the national creative spirit of the times. It was also relevant to the changing mood of its traditional markets.

Four years later, the brand was declared dead. There was so much debate about it that in the end, there was no critical mass of support for the new brand from among its leaders and citizenry. If it was not believed by its own people, how can you expect people from other nations to believe in it?

In the end, it is the faith and trust in the brand of the various stakeholders that can make or break a brand.

Some of you came tonight with your own brand idea in mind. I can tell you with conviction that if you cannot convince 50 other people in this room who brought along their own brand ideas, that yours is the best brand, it has absolutely no chance of succeeding.

That’s why I’d like to invite all of you to join hands and rally behind the brand we are about to reveal. Together, let’s make the brand not only believable, but also real.

After all, no one can argue that our motherland is beautiful. And it’s the only one we have.

Thank you and good evening.

Walk Write This Way with Writer’s Block Philippines and Carlos Celdran

Writer’s Block Philippines is once again holding a one of a kind travel writing workshop with Carlos Celdran.

A group founded by freelance writers Ana Santos, Nikka Sarthou, and Nina Terol-Zialcita, Writer’s Block Philippines believes in conducting writing workshops that are both experiential and inspiring.

“Combining something we are passionate about–like food and travelling–with writing has been our formula from the start. It’s proven to be something that participants look for and look forward to,” says Ana Santos, who writes about sexual health rights and women in armed conflict.

Take a walk around the famed city of Intramuros and listen to Manila tourist guide extraordinaire Carlos Celdran regale us with his own kind of history lesson / tour that is also a one-man theatrical performance.

Workshop participants will start the morning with the Carlos Celdran “If these walls could talk” walking tour of Intramuros and then be given free time to write about their experience.

Later, these writing pieces will be discussed with Writer’s Block Founders and a guest speaker from Travelife Magazine who will share what really makes a good travel piece and provide an editorial perspective on what editors look for.

“I see travel as a learning experience–whether it is a local or foreign destination. Traveling is a nice opportunity to learn about the things beyond the four walls of the classroom. For me, the best way to document each travel experience is to write about it. Walk Write This Way 2.0 will help aspiring travel writers become more effective in their craft, as the founders of Writer’s Block Philippines will share tips that every writer will find useful.”, says Nikka Sarthou, a lifestyle and travel journalist.

Writer’s Block Philippines also dispels the myth that travelling entails a lot of time and money. “Sometimes, the most surprising discoveries await us just in our own backyards,” says Nina Terol – Zialcita, who writes about themes on “changemaking” and culture and the arts. “Those of us who live in Manila tend to take it for granted because all we see is the traffic, the pollution, and the stressors that accompany our daily grind. But if we peel all those layers and look closely, we will discover that we live in a vibrant and culturally diverse locale where there are also many stories to be uncovered and shared.”

As Writer’s Block Philippines is a firm believer in freelance writing as a career, various writing opportunities in travel writing will also be discussed. We hope that at the end of the workshop, the participants will have learned the basics of what they will need to combine their passion for writing and travelling and earn from it!

Writer’s Block Philippines believes that writing is both art and craft, both creative and methodical, a form of expression and a discipline. Writing itself is only one aspect of “writing”; a culmination of other processes that make it easier for you to write your piece. Through its workshops, Writer’s Block will bring all these different processes together and teach you how to be an effective writer.

Two cultures. One platform.

In a world of chaos, there is a simple language that binds us all: movement. That is why E-Dance Theatre decided to take hiphop off the streets and merge it with modern/ contemporary dance to tell a story.

fUSEd is a gamble on the single similarity between two different dance forms that are not normally associated with each other: the need to differentiate, the search for a unique expression. Hiphop is a product of communities looking for an identity in the streets where they felt free to express themselves, modern dance is a break-away from the rigidities of classical ballet. Despite the varying techniques, E-dance bravely took the challenge to weave these two dance forms together in an effort to create a new dimension in performing arts.

fUSEd charms the audience through the creative portrayal of daily life. The nameless characters tell the story of you and me, the person right next to you on the train, the one you passed on the street on your way to work, the one you might bump into on your lunch break, fellow travelers going in, out, and along this chaotic world.

Born in 2002, E-Dance Theatre is a group of young independent artists seeking alternative spaces to enhance their technique and experiment with different forms of performing arts. Inspired by the growth of multi-media and interactive technology, and the contemporary dance tradition, E-dance engages in collaborative experiments with other artists from different fields, exploring the different approaches to creating dance.

fUSEd is E-Dance’s most recent experiment, made possible with the special participation of Philippine All Stars. Showing on November 12, 2010, at Tanghalang Pasigueño, Pasig City. For more info, please contact Katrina @ 09178228601
